Land is a critical asset for promoting agricultural production and economic enhancement. Secure land tenure is strongly associated with higher levels of investment and productivity in agriculture and therefore higher incomes and greater economic wellbeing.
Women’s Land Rights are fundamental human rights, foundational to gender equality and women’s dignity, improving food security, effective climate action, poverty eradication, and sustainable economic growth. The Government of Uganda like many states across the globe recognizes the importance of secure women’s land rights and has put in place gender responsive legislative frameworks to advance WLR.
In Uganda where agriculture is the backbone of the economy, land is a key production asset on which many livelihoods depend, and women contribute to the highest percentage of the agricultural labor force. However, despite their role in the sector, many women are not able to fully enjoy their land rights.
Enhancing productivity remains one of the main concerns in agricultural value chains. Besides improving food security, increased farm outputs in the form of yields naturally translates to higher incomes and increased profitability for small-scale farmers, most of whom operate in rural areas across Africa.
This Gender Analysis is an intervention under the 'Fair for All' Power of Voices partnership programme whose strategic objective is to strengthen civil society which is capable of creating space and mobilizing people across various parts of the country geographies to demand and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable trade and value chains that respect human rights, protect the environment and promote women’s economic empowerment.
